Fact and Fiction in The Boat - Literature Essay Samples
The Dutch Historian Pieter Geyl once stated that ââ¬Å"Imagination plays too important a role in the writing of history, and what is imagination but the projection of the authors personality.â⬠(1) If we were to replace the word ââ¬Ëhistoryââ¬â¢ with ââ¬Ëa historically based storyââ¬â¢, is this not also the case with Nam Leââ¬â¢s novel The Boat? Of course, one must acknowledge the fact that Leââ¬â¢s book is effectively a work of fiction, yet there are so many true historical elements within his stories that one could be excused for believing that Geyl had said this with Leââ¬â¢s writings in mind granted that the former had lived to see our times. In each story, the author recounts someoneââ¬â¢s struggle to find their place in the world, often to the backdrop of an event of some historical significance, while placing upon it his own fictitious mark. This essay will explore some of the ways in which Le portrays and links together a few of the complexities of truth, fiction and identity in the world we live in. Let us begin by defining what this means before we apply it to Leââ¬â¢s text.Quid est Veritas? What is ââ¬Ëtruthââ¬â¢ to the mind of Nam Le? Perhaps it is the ââ¬Å"ideal or fundamental reality apart from and transcending perceived experienceâ⬠. Or is it simply ââ¬Å"conformity with fact or realityâ⬠?(2) One would suggest that Le expertly juggles both of these versions of ââ¬Ëtruthââ¬â¢ in his stories. Let us examine his opening story, Love and Honor and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrificeâ⬠. This story is a prime example of this assertion. As reviewer Charles Dââ¬â¢Ambrosio writes: ââ¬Å"there are the old verities, stubborn truths that survive, insisting on themselvesâ⬠One such ââ¬Ëverityââ¬â¢ is the natural bond between father and son the family bond that withstands all. Blood is thicker than water, as is made clear in the exchange between Linda and Nam: ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ë I thought you didnââ¬â¢t talk to him at all.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ËHeââ¬â¢s my father.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (3) (p. 5)Three small words contain so much significance. Moreover, in spite of the fact that they have lead separate lives for many years now, Nam still cherishes that boyish desire to please his father. ââ¬Å"He would read it, with his book-learned English, and he would recognise himself in a new wayHe would be pleased with me.â⬠(4) (p. 29) Even after Namââ¬â¢s father burns the precious manuscript, and we expect the rift between father and son to be irreparable, on closer reading we can see from Namââ¬â¢s tone that this is not so: ââ¬Å"If I had known then what I knew later, I wouldnââ¬â¢t have said the things I did. I wouldnââ¬â¢t have told him he didnââ¬â¢t understand ââ¬â for clearly he did. I wouldnââ¬â¢t have told him that what he had done was unforgivable. That I wished he had never come, or that he was no father to me. But I hadnââ¬â¢t known, and, as I waited, feeling the wind change, all I saw was a man coming toward me who had destroyed himself, yet again, in my name.â⬠(5) (p. 30)At the time, he may have felt that way, but now, when he is recounting the event, he realises that his father had acted for his own good, and ââ¬Å"the old veritiesâ⬠the family ties survive. ââ¬Å"Love and Honour, etcâ⬠also illustrates the other definition of ââ¬Ëtruthââ¬â¢ for it is clear that Le has based this story on his own life experiences. The protagonist shares his name, childhood and career choices. At first, we get the impression that this is authentic in every way, an autobiographical account of his experiences while writing The Boat. However, we soon realise that this is not the case, when we see the fictitious Nam decide to act upon his friendââ¬â¢s advice to ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëtotally exploit the Vietnamese thingââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (6) (p. 9), in view of the deadline which looms before him. Clearly, his in tentions in recounting his fatherââ¬â¢s experience were therefore not entirely pure perhaps his father had a point when he declared that Nam would not be able to write the story(7) (p 25), in all its raw, undeniable authenticity. Nam himself said in an interview that ââ¬Å"there was always a reticence on my parentsââ¬â¢ behalf to resist that time in their lives. Thereââ¬â¢s always a cultural reticence among vietnamese people in discussing itin a sensationalist wayâ⬠(8) Hence the reason Le feels compelled to tamper with history and stamp it with his own brand of fiction. ââ¬Å"I charge myself not with getting something right but with doing it justice. Capturing not the essence but an essence.â⬠(9) He may use authentic historical events, but he chooses to include caricatures instead of real people in these stories (10). By doing so, he loses some of the sympathy we may have felt towards them if they were real, for in our subconscious remains the thought that th ey are only figments of a writerââ¬â¢s imagination, and therefore, much harder to identify with we are still moved, but not as much as he perhaps intended for us to be. Deviating from history may also make it difficult for him to convey his desired meaning to us, as we come with our own preconceived notions about how things occurred. When we discover that his stories are not as authentic as we had believed them to be, we inevitably lose faith in the historical credibility of the rest of his stories if he sensationalises that which he knows, are the rest of his stories predominantly confined to the bounds of his imagination? How much is based on truth, and how much is pure fiction?But we underestimate Le, of course, for he knows that he has set himself a difficult task by choosing to write in this way, while endeavoring to keep ââ¬Å"the sort of ringing authenticity that enables ââ¬Ëthat true empathy, that deep, clear, close inhabitation by the reader of another consciousnes s in another context. Thatââ¬â¢s the key, the gold in the ore ââ¬â where imagination and understanding meet, recognising familiarity in strangeness, truth in otherness, and yourself, in a tricksy mess of wordsââ¬â¢(11) , for as he goes on to say in another interview: ââ¬Å"Fiction makes strange even the places we knowâ⬠(12). On the other hand, as he loses our faith in his historical accuracy, he gains our admiration in his abilities as a writer. For although some of his other stories (such as ââ¬Å"Cartagenaâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Meeting Elsieâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Halflead Bayâ⬠) may not be grounded in such historical or ethnic principles as ââ¬Å"Love and Honour etcâ⬠or ââ¬Å"The Boatâ⬠, in these stories he provides more insight into the characters themselves. The historical events are allocated to the background used as a backdrop for the action, whereas in ââ¬Å"The Boatâ⬠, the focus of the story is essentially upon the gut-wrenching journey of the Vietnamese boat people, upon the trials they suffered and the sacrifices they had to endure. Of course, there are the ever-present protagonists (Nam and Mai), but they must be included if the author has any desire for his story to move forward. In ââ¬Å"Cartagenaâ⬠, however, we are allowed to become intimately acquainted with the boy-turned-hitman, and in this manner we are compelled to endure the dilemmas and pains which he undergoes throughout the story. It is also in this way that Le presents us with the complexities of identity. Throughout this story the protagonist Ron endeavours to find his niche in the world, as he plays at ball with his child comrades, or plays at being the bread-winner for his girlish mother. But it would seem by a cruel twist of fate that there really is no place in the world for a ââ¬Ëmisfitââ¬â¢ such as he is: unless this place be Cartagena, that place where as the sun rises, ââ¬Å"it is a slow-motion explosion like in the moviesâ⬠(13) a childââ¬â¢s fantasy, for a boy who missed out on his childhood. Similarly in ââ¬Å"Meeting Eliseâ⬠, we have Henry trying to retain contact with his estranged daughter, the child who would inevitably form a part of his identity as a father, and perhaps once upon a time as a passionate young man, who had more to care for than his paintings. All of these characters are real people, people we might encounter each day on the street, people such as ourselves. This forms a sense of realism as we can identify with them, which we may find harder to do with Nam the writer or the refugee Mai. But to a certain extent, we can identify with these characters also, in view of the fact that they undergo trials equal to their state in life. Nam Le didnââ¬â¢t write about heroes, or even dastardly villains he chose to write about people he knew, or people he could have known if he had been given the chance.Of course, for those of us who still believe there to be ââ¬Ëa fraction too much fictionââ¬â¢ present in his writing, some of this realism is inevitably lost. Throughout the years, America has always debated whether education is needed- if it helps people succeed or not. The argument in the past was always over high school education, which is now mandatory. That decision has helped the US rise economically and industrially. Today, the US is in the middle of the same debate- this time, over college. Some, like David Leonhardt, a columnist for the business section of The New York Times, think a college education creates success in any job. Others, such as Christopher Beha, an author and assistant editor of Harperââ¬â¢s Magazine, believe that some college ââ¬Å"educationâ⬠(like that of for-profit schools) is a waste of time, and can even be harmful to students. Each stance on this argument has truth to it,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Even excluding success in the job market, a college education seems to simply make people happier, due the psychic income earned when accomplishing their degree. I believe this last fact alone gives p roof that college is a good thing. But many people, it seems, think differently. Families are now aiming low when it comes to college- or are simply not going at all. Money could play a huge part in this decision- after all, the cost of college has skyrocketed over the years, and so has the amount of student loan debt. This is something even Leonhardt admits, stating that, because of this, only about 33 percent of young adults get a four-year college degree today, while another 10 percent receive a two-year degree (Leonhardt). And even though many colleges offer financial aid packages, that money may soon be cut and the cost of college will continue to grow. It is true that, in my personal experience, just because a student is awarded financial aid does not mean they have a golden ticket to University. This leaves many desperate students the only option of taking out as many loans as they think they can handle- often more than they should. Debt is not a new issue for America, but it is still a problem. Steve was not only the founder of Apple and Pixar, but he leads various organizations towards the success. Steve was known for hard work and intelligence, but he possesses simplicity. There are number of unique characteristics that made Steve Jobs an inspirational leader, and he taught various lessons to an individual for adopting unique leadership style. Generally, it is a well-known fact that certain amount of confidence was necessary for handling leadership position, and Steve jobs shows how important this is with his own efforts and products. The most important trait which Steve Jobs possessed was confidence, and this is something that Steve gave to his team members also. One of the most famous stories related to Steve Jobs was when he asked for special type of glass for the front part of the I-phone, and he wanted that glass as soon as possible. His employee told him that it was not possible then Steve simply said, it is possible and you can do it. Steve generates this type of confidence not only in him and in his products, but also in others. Steve was the leader who was known for the situational leadership, which means his use personal traits as per the situations and circumstances (Achieve iconic, n.d.). President Barack Obama is the charismatic and transformational leader, and he has ability to attract the other persons towards his side and influence them to accomplish their goals. He uses charismatic approach which is transformational also which change the mind set of people on permanent basis (Tough nickel, n.d.). Conclusion: After considering the above facts it is clear that traits, motives, and effectiveness of leaders are related with each other. Various personal traits contribute to effective leadership, and these traits changed as per the situation or position of individual in which they are practiced. However, it is important to assess the motive theory of leadership for the purpose of making difference between their own motives and also for acknowledging the situation which suits them. Red blood cells may increase in number and the haemoglobin content and oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood may also rise. Increased capillarisation of skeletal muscle: The average number of capillaries supplying each muscle fibres is: â⬠¢ 5. for trained athletes â⬠¢ 4. 4 for untrained athletes Changes to blood cholesterol, triglycerides, low- and high-density lipoprotein levels: Results may include a decrease in blood cholesterol levels, triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Respiratory Adaptations Increased lung ventilation: More efficient and improved lung ventilation At rest and during sub-maximal exercise, ventilation may be reduced due to improved oxygen extraction However, during maximal workloads, ventilation is increased because of increased tidal volume (amount of air breathed in and out in one breath) and respiratory frequency (the number of breaths taken per minute). Pulmonary diffusion (the ability of the blood to extract oxygen from the alveoli) is also enhanced. Consequently, lactic acid and hydrogen ion accumulation will be delayed until these higher work-load intensities are attained The athlete can ââ¬Å"work harder and for longer periodsâ⬠Muscle Tissue Adaptations to A erobic (Endurance) Training: Chronic aerobic training adaptations within muscular tissue are best produced through continuous training or high-repetition resistance training The following tissue-level changes can be observed within skeletal muscles following extensive endurance training: Increased oxygen utilisation: Aerobic training enhances the bodyââ¬â¢s ability to attract oxygen into the muscle cells and then utilise it to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for muscle contraction This process occurs in the following ways: â⬠¢ Increased size and number of mitochondria ââ¬â Mitochondria are the site of ATP synthesis and where glycogen and triglyceride stores are oxidised (Greater oxidisation of fuels to produce ATP) â⬠¢ Increased myoglobin stores ââ¬â Myoglobin is the substance in the muscle cell that attracts oxygen from the bloodstream into the muscle. (Increase ability to extract oxygen) Increased muscular fuel stores: Increase in the muscular storage of glycogen, free fatty acids and triglycerides, along with the oxidative enzymes required to metabolise these fuel stores and produce ATP. Increased oxidation of glucose and fats: The muscular adaptations result in an increase in the capacity of muscle fibres to oxidate both glucose and fats The capacity of the aerobic system to metabolise these fuels is increased Increased oxidation of fats as a fuel source; due to: â⬠¢ Increased storage of triglycerides and free fatty acids â⬠¢ Increased levels of enzymes associated with fat metabolism Means that: At any given exercise intensity, a trained individual has to rely less on glycogen, thereby ââ¬Å"sparingâ⬠glycogen stores (Glycogen sparing) Therefore delaying the time to exhaustion due to glycogen depletion. Decreased utilisation of the anaerobic glycolysis (lactic acid) system: The enhanced capacity of the muscles to aerobically metabolise glucose and fats and other muscular level adaptations also means that there is less reliance upon the anaerobic glycolysis system to produce energy for ATP resynthesis until higher exercise intensities are reached. Allows athletes to work at higher intensities without exceeding lactate threshold. OR â⬠¢ Aerobic training results in an increase in the lactate threshold Eg. An athlete must run at a faster pace in order to accumulate the same amount of blood lactic acid as before training Muscle-fibre type adaptation: Some research has shown evidence that skeletal muscle switches fibre types from fast twitch to slow twitch as a result of endurance training.
